"How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk"
by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish
This book is an excellent guide to communicating with your child. It is mainly for the school aged child but has worked well in some younger, more mature four year olds. What I love about this book is that it is THIN! Each chapter gives you a work toward goal to accomplish each week. These goals are very manageable for the busy parent and the results are very rewarding. I recommend this book for all parents looking for a more satisfying conversation with their children. The cost is between ten and fifteen dollars. (review by Marla Conger MD)
"How to Talk So Kids Can Learn"

"Parents' Answer Book"

"The New Strong-willed Child"
by James C. Dobson
"The Highly Sensitive Child"
by Elaine Aron PhD
This is a great book that helps you understand the trait of 'highly sensitive'. Dr Aron estimates the 15-20% of people are born with this trait. The book opens with a checklist to help you as a parent know if this is a fit for your child. Highly sensitive children not only have sensitivities to new environments and textures, they also have stronger emotions. These children feel and express intense love, joy and empathy but they also struggle with anger, fear and sadness. They often can not make decisions quickly and temper tantrums are likely severe. This book give practical advice to raising a highly sensitive child. Dr Aron focuses on how to raise a joyous, happy, highly sensitive child. (review by Britney Cox RN, MSN, CPNP)
"Your Defiant Child, 8 Steps to Better Behavior"
by Russell A Barkley, PHD and Christine M Benton
This is a very good book that outlines a step by step approach to communication and discipline with your child. It starts with a great self evaluation of the parents and discusses temperament and how this affects parenting. There are good tools to determine if your child needs professional help for their behavior or is this something that can be addressed with changes in the home. Dr. Barkley's advise helps a parent to learn to enjoy their child and praise them while standing firm when needed. The book gives a good breakdown of appropriate discipline and rewards for different age groups and how to plan ahead and not be caught off guard. This does take a commitment to read and follow the step by step program, but I would recommend this book to any parent who is committed to following through a program for change.
